1840 MAIL SHREWSBURY TO LUDLOW WITH 1D BLACK PL.1B (SG2)(RE) WITH 'SHREWSBURY/+' SKELETON DATE STAMP (SH680). Fine letter from Shrewsbury dated Oct 7 1840 to 'Wm. Lloyd Esq, Solicitor, Ludlow' with fine 1d black pl.1b (SG2) lettered RE with four fine margins and tied good strike red-orange Maltese cross of Shrewsbury. Stamp shows 7 and 10 o'clock ray flaws NW square and 'BURR RUB UNDER VALUE' (Spec AS5g). On reverse very fine strike 'SHREWSBURY/+' skeleton date stamp OC 7 1840 (SH680), this being the earliest recorded usage of this hand stamp only recorded between 7th - 10th October 1840 and nineteen days in 1843. Apparently one of only four examples known used in 1840. (Ref 132886).
