1839 FREE MAIL HAYDON BRIDGE, NORTHUMBERLAND TO LIVERPOOL WITH 'WHITFIELD/PENNY POST' HAND STAMP (NR703). Entire sent free mail from Haydon Bridge, Northumberland to 'Wm. Wallace Currie Esqr, Liverpool' dated November 21 1839 and charged '1' Penny Post only. On reverse fine strike 'Whitfield/Penny Post' hand stamp in black (NR703) and 'HAYDON BRIDGE' date stamp NO 21 1839 in black (NR315). Earliest recorded usage of the Penny Post hand stamp, the only pre 1840 example recorded, ex. Ed Druce collection. (Ref 129918).
