1840 UNIFORM FOURPENNY POST, '1D' LOCAL RATE USED IN EDINBURGH JANUARY 6TH. Fine wrapper used locally in Edinburgh on January 6th 1840, during the Uniform Fourpenny Post period, to 'Mr Gray, York Lane, Edinr', posted unpaid with fine strike hand stamp '1' charge mark in black and Edinburgh date stamp JAN 6 1840. When the Unform Penny Post was introduced if a cheaper postal rate was already in use this lower rate continued to be used. (Ref 138954).
