1850 DATED PIECE FROM WATCHET, SOMERSET WITH 1D PL.99 (SG8)(RH) VERY LATE USE OF THE MALTESE CROSS. Fine piece, approx 88 x 78, with good to fine 1d pl.99 (SG8) lettered RH, fine four margins but corner bend affects, tied very fine strike of the 'watery' Maltese cross of Watchet. On reverse fine strike 'Watchet/Penny Post' hand stamp in black (SO834), 'BRISTOL' date stamp AU 7 1850 and contemporary manuscript 'K. J. Gimblet, Watchet 6 Augt 1850'. A very fine late usage of the Maltese cross and Watchet is one of the known recorded places. (Ref 136854).
