1846 MAIL HASTINGS, SUSSEX TO BATTLE WITH 1D PL.60 (SG9) WITH MIXED RED AND BLACK INK '342' NUMERAL OF HASTINGS. Fine letter from Hastings dated July 20th 1846 to 'Mr Witmarsh, Solicitor, Battle, Sussex' with fine 1d pl.60 showing plate wear (SG9) lettered KB, four close to large margins and tied fine strike '342' numeral of Hastings which is very clearly MIXED INK where stamper has used incorrect red ink pad and then corrected themselves. Alongside fine strike 'HASTINGS' date stamp JY 20 1846 in red. The use of red ink as a cancellation is very rare in Hastings and Parmenter notes 'seen in red on a loose stamp'. Very rare item.
