    1842 MAIL ALEXANDRIA, DUMBARTONSHIRE TO AUCHENBLUE WITH 1D (SG8) CANCELLED WITH THE RARE NORMAL 'ALEXANDRIA' MALTESE CROSS AND 'ALEXANDRIA' STRAIGHT LINE HAND STAMP. Envelope from Alexandria to 'James Arnott Esqre, Leithfield Cottage, Auchenblue, Kincardineshire' with 1d (SG8) lettered TJ, touched at foot otherwise good margins and tied good to fine strikes of the thin lined 'normal type' Maltese cross of Alexandria without the watery appearance. On front fine strike 'ALEXANDRIA' straight line hand stamp in red and 'LAURENCEKIRK' date stamp AU 11 1842. On reverse fine strike boxed '2' receivers hand stamp in black and 'MONTROSE' date stamp AU 10 1842. Mike Jackson records three examples of this 'normal type' cross and six examples of the 'rarer' watery type cancellation. (Ref 136861).
