Letter from Charmouth dated Oct 23rd 1815 to "Captain John Ross H.M.Ship Driver Portsmouth" charged "1/3" and fair strike CHARMOUTH straight line hand stamp in black. Letter redirected to Leith with fine strike of the boxed "Addt/½" hand stamp in black. This Charmouth hand stamp first recorded hand stamp in use and this example 4 years earlier than county cat. records. On reverse London date stamp and very fine boxed "No.2" receiver's hand stamp. The addressee is the well known explorer. (Ref 111343).
