1791 MAIL FROM RYDE, ISLE OF WIGHT TO CAITHNESS, VIA WAPPING WITH 'RECEIVING.HOUSE/I A/WAPPING' LONDON GENERAL POST RECEIVER'S HAND STAMP OF JOHN ALLEN. Fine letter written on board an outward bound vessel 'Augustus Caesar' at the Mother Banks of Ryde, Isle of Wight and addressed to Alexander Henderson in Caithness, dated 12th November 1791. Letter charged '7' and sent via Wapping, on reverse good to fine strike of the rare 'RECEIVING.HOUSE/I A/WAPPING' large circular type London General Post receiver's hand stamp of John Allen (L81). The hand stamp part overstruck London date stamp and alongside Edinburgh Bishop mark 'DE/18'. John Allen, a ships chandler was also a London General Post receiver and this hand stamp is recorded in use in 1791 and 1792 only. (Ref 129312).
