Description
TWO 1839 COVERS CHRISTCHURCH TO POOLE WITH '4' RATE, ONE PRE AND ONE USED DURING THE UNIFORM FOURPENNY POST. Letter from Christchurch dated Oct 12 1839 to 'H. M. Aldridge Esqre., Solr., Poole' with manuscript 'pd 4' and on reverse 'CHRISTCHURCH' date stamp OC 2 1839 in error for OC 12 1839, a good example of the 4d single sheet rate not exceeding fifteen miles. Also fine letter from same correspondence Christchurch to Poole dated Dec 14 1839 with manuscript charge '4', 'CHRISTCHURCH' date stamp DE 14 1839, a fine and scarce provincial usage of the Uniform Fourpenny Post. A most unusual pair of covers showing that this postal reform did not always result in reduced postal charges. (2 items). (Ref 131783).
