1848 MAIL SHERBORNE TO STURMINSTER NEWTON/PROMISSORY NOTE/WAFER SEAL. Envelope Sherborne to "Mr Jenkins Sturminster Newton" with fine 1d (SG8) lettered FF, four close to large margins tied "702" numeral of Sherborne and alongside SHERBORNE date stamp MR 31 1848. Envelope with note dated 1st April 1848 "on demand I promise to pay...the sum of one hundred pounds..." with embossed "3/6d" revenue stamp and on reverse fine strike "CROWN/SHILLING/1/PR QUIRE" tax cachet. Very unusual. On reverse of envelope wafer seal in yellow (damaged when opening) "SHERBORNE AND YEOVIL/MERCURY OFFICE". Very fine item. (Ref 111708).
