1823 PRIVATELY CARRIED MAIL CARLISLE TO EDENHALL, CARRIED WITH A PARCEL SO LEGALLY ALLOWED. Letter, slight soiling, from Carlisle dated 2nd April 1823 to 'Sir Philip Musgrave, Bart, Edenhall' sent free of charge as accompanying a parcel with manuscript 'Carriage paid/171 Bundles Lathes/pr. Richd. Sewell Carrs.'. Very scarce example of privately carried mail, carriers could legally carry mail if it accompanied a parcel. (Ref 134039).
