Description
1838 GREAT WESTERN FIRST VOYAGE US TO THE UK. Fine wrapper from New York to Rothschilds of London and endorsed "pr Great Western". On reverse manuscript notation 7 May 1838 from Prince Ward and King, on front charged "3/-" and good strike of the "BRISTOL/SHIP-LETTER" step type hand stamp in black. The Great Western left New York for the first time on the 7th May 1838, arriving Bristol 22nd May 1838 and this wrapper was carried aboard this sailing. On reverse London date stamp 23 MY 1838. A superb and rare transatlantic usage. (Ref 116416).
