1890 PENNY POSTAGE JUBILEE, 1840 WRAPPER (MAY 2ND) TO THE GUILDHALL, WITH 'SOUTH KENSINGTON' EXHIBITION HAND STAMP. Fine 1840 wrapper used in London from Shadwell to 'Mr B Scotts, Chamberlain Office, Guildhall, London' sent unpaid with '2' hand stamp charge mark and on front good strike 'T.P/Shadwell' receivers hand stamp in black (L504/SHAD6). On reverse fine strike London date stamp MY 2 1840, four days before official use of the Penny Black. Wrapper taken to the 1890 South Kensington exhibition where 1d lilac affixed (SG172) and cancelled fine strike 'PENNY POSTAGE JUBILEE/V CROWN R/1840 1890/2.JY.90/SOUTH KENSINGTON' exhibition hand stamp.
