1840 MAIL OSWESTRY, SHROPS TO LONDON WITH 1D GREY-BLACK PL.3 (SG3)(FC) WITH BOXED 'TOO/LATE' HAND STAMP TYPE J (SH459). Fine letter from Oswestry to 'Mefsrs. Bicknell and Lethbridge, Solrs., Abington Street, London' with good 1d grey-black pl.3 (SG3) lettered FC, stamp with slight soiling but four margins and tied red Maltese cross of Oswestry. On reverse fine strike 'OSWESTRY' date stamp JU 5 1840 in red and good to fine strike boxed 'TOO/LATE' hand stamp type J (SG459). Latter is a very rare hand stamp with only two examples known in red and this is the only example on a penny black cover. Ex Guy Bridges collection. (Ref 132949).
