1840 POSTALLY USED SOUTHGATE CARICATURE NO.1 FROM OXFORD TO TAUNTON. A good to fine postally used example 1840 Southgate caricature No.1, the 'pickpocket' caricature from Oxford to Taunton, pre-paid '1'. On front light strike 'OXFORD' date stamp JU 26 1840 and London date stamp JU 27 1840. Minor peripheral faults. A very fine caricature with Britannia her right eye covered by a patch and dispatching her messengers. On the right a postman is attempting to deliver a packet to a man on the gallows while immediately below a pickpocket is plying his trade regardless of this warning. Rare. RPS certificate 188575. (Ref 135694).
